The Master of Science programme in Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy is designed to provide students with advanced and contemporary education in diagnostic imaging sciences, radiation-based therapies, and the clinical applications of radioisotopes. The programme integrates clinical, technological, scientific, and research components, preparing highly qualified professionals capable of making a meaningful contribution to the modern healthcare system.
The programme aims to develop specialists with the knowledge and practical competencies required to operate and work with advanced medical technologies, including Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Angiography, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), radiotherapy equipment (LINAC), advanced treatment planning techniques (3D-CRT, IMRT, and VMAT), and clinical dosimetry systems. By integrating clinical practice with the latest technological and scientific developments, the programme seeks to prepare professionals capable of responding effectively and competently to the evolving challenges of modern diagnostic imaging, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine.
To address the needs of the national and regional labour markets, the programme offers three specialised study profiles:
· Advanced Diagnostic Imaging, focusing on cross-sectional imaging techniques, advanced diagnostic procedures, and the application of sophisticated imaging technologies.
· Radiotherapy and Dosimetry, dedicated to radiotherapy treatment planning, quality assurance, dose optimisation, and the safe and effective delivery of radiation treatments.
· Nuclear Medicine, focusing on the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of radionuclides, nuclear imaging technologies, and radiation safety management.
The programme is designed to provide a balanced combination of scientific theory, practical training, and analytical development, equipping students with the competencies required to integrate into hospital departments, oncology centres, research laboratories, medical technology companies, and academic institutions.
To ensure the development of advanced clinical and technical competencies, particular emphasis is placed on clinical placements and practical training in diagnostic imaging departments, radiotherapy services, nuclear medicine departments, and clinical dosimetry units. Students are also introduced to advanced software applications for treatment planning, image processing and analysis, and physical simulation.
The establishment of this programme at Western Balkans University (WBU) responds to the rapid development of medical technologies, the growing need for professional specialisation, and the increasingly important role of artificial intelligence in diagnostic imaging, early disease detection, and radiotherapy treatment planning. These developments have created a growing demand for professionals with advanced technical, scientific, and analytical competencies, which this programme seeks to develop through a comprehensive and structured academic approach.
The programme has been designed with reference to international best practices and the academic frameworks of recognised universities, drawing upon the extensive experience of national and international academic staff, as well as the requirements of the national and global labour markets. Its distinctive structure and educational methodology provide students with access to contemporary international scientific literature and incorporate the latest developments in medical physics, oncology, radiobiology, radiation protection, and diagnostic imaging technologies.
Rather than focusing exclusively on equipment operation and clinical protocols, the programme integrates fundamental knowledge from the exact sciences, radiation physics, biomedical engineering, biophysics, and clinical sciences. This interdisciplinary approach enables students to develop advanced analytical, interpretative, problem-solving, and research skills. It is particularly suited to individuals interested in medical technology, advanced healthcare, diagnostic innovation, and modern radiation-based therapies.
